What is the General Data Protection Regulation?
An updated and standardised law covering all EU countries, with new requirements for documenting IT procedures, performing risk assessments, rules on breach notifications, and tighter data minimisation.
Why is it important?
Non-compliance penalties can reach between 2% to 4% of an organisation’s global revenue. That could be an exceptionally large penalty.

As a result of an attack on their website, about 500,000 customer records were extracted by a malicious third party. The UK’s data protection agency claims their website was compromised due to poor cyber security arrangements. This would represent the largest GDPR fine to date.
